This guest blog post was written by Sean Noe, Ohio Reading Corps Project Coordinator at ESC of Central Ohio. As our communities work to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact on students’ educational progress still lingers, resulting in the need for additional summer programming. In response to this learning loss, the Ohio Reading and Math Corps and AmeriCorps Mentors for Success created the COVID Education Recovery Corps (CERC). On June 1, twenty four community members began their AmeriCorps service with CERC and will serve 300 hours this summer in Columbus and Dayton. Some members will tutor students in math and reading, while others will provide one-on-one mentoring for students to address social emotional development. This service will help students develop foundational skills they may have struggled with this past year and create positive momentum going into the 2021-2022 school year. Our efforts will continue in the fall in greater capacity, with opportunities to serve students around the state. The Ohio Reading and Math Corps AmeriCorps members provide ongoing individualized math and reading intervention for students in kindergarten through grade five who have not met grade level proficiency in elementary schools in central, northeast, and southwest counties. The AmeriCorps Mentors for Success members serve as near-peer mentors for middle and high school students in Central Ohio.
